Boron Carbide Features:

(A) Physical Properties

  • High Hardness: With a Mohs hardness of 9.3, second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride, boron carbide is extremely hard. It's used in abrasives like grinding wheels and sandpaper for effective material processing.
  • Low Density: Its density is about 2.52 g/cm³. In aerospace, it helps reduce structural weight while maintaining strength, enhancing aircraft performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Chemical Stability: Boron carbide is highly chemically stable, resistant to most acids, alkalis, and organic solvents. It doesn't react with water or air at room temperature and is used in harsh chemical environments like chemical storage linings.

(B) Thermal Properties

  • High Melting Point: With a melting point of 2450°C, it maintains stability at high temperatures. It's used as furnace lining in steelmaking and glassmaking for heat insulation and energy saving.
  • Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: Its small volume change with temperature makes it suitable for precision instruments and optical components, ensuring accuracy and stability.

(C) Electrical Properties

  • Semiconducting: It has semiconducting properties, with conductivity between conductors and insulators. Doping can adjust its properties, and it's used as a doping agent or buffer layer in some semiconductor devices.

Boron Carbide Applications:

(A) Industrial Field

  • Abrasives and Grinding Tools: Its high hardness makes it ideal for abrasives. It's also used in precision grinding and polishing for fine processing of hard materials, improving workpiece quality.
  • High-Temperature Materials and Insulation: In high-temperature industries, it's used for high-temperature equipment and insulation due to its high melting point and low thermal expansion coefficient.

(B) Electronic Field

  • Semiconductor Devices: Its semiconducting nature allows use as a doping agent or buffer layer to improve device performance and stability. It's also used in special high-temperature semiconductor devices.
  • Electronic Packaging: Its low density, high hardness, and chemical stability make it a potential material for electronic packaging, as a protective shell or heat dissipation material.

(C) Other Fields

  • Ceramics and Composites: As an additive, it improves the hardness, strength, and wear resistance of ceramics and composites, expanding their application scope.
  • Lubricant Additives: Boron carbide micropowder can improve lubricant wear resistance and anti-wear ability, reducing friction and wear in machinery.
